Beginners short guide to Bowling

Welcome to St Martin's

You will be made very welcome at St Martin's Bowls Club whatever your gender, age or experience. We strive to increase our diversity and we enjoy playing mixed games. We do have more male players than female at present, however if we had more women members it would increase our scope to play women's matches with other local clubs both friendly and competitive. It is a great way of making new friends from our own and other clubs.

Coaching is available in groups or individual sessions on days and times as required, where possible.

BDA (Bowls Development Alliance) Bowls has recently joined with the Women's Institutes around the country to encourage women to participate in local activities, one of which is Bowls.   At our recent Open Evening we welcomed 13 women who were trying out the sport for the first time.  We had a lot of fun and will be running follow-up coaching session on Monday evening at 6pm and also on other days (to be announced).  We will be also be holding taster sessions for groups such as WI and Carer's groups. Please contact Lucy Walden for details (01432 507486) - Woods will be provided. Just wear flat shoes and comfortable clothes. Come and try this game for Fun, Fitness and Friendship.

We are trying to source some second hand woods (bowls) of small size such as 00, 0 and 1.  If you have any you would like to donate please contact Lucy Walden 01432 507483 or email

We have members ranging in age from 16 to 90.  Here is a picture of (left to right) Lucy, Diane, Keri, Mandy and Irene who all love the game! Irene is one of our best women players and she recently celebrated her 90th birthday and has just bought a new set of woods!. Mandy has achieved much success at county level and has also started to play short mat.  Keri has played with the club since she was 14 and she is now enjoying the challenge of playing at County level.  Women members play in the Tarmac League and friendly matches with clubs in Herefordshire and beyond.

We do still use the traditional black bowls, but some people have opted for multi-coloured!
